Maybury State Park’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

There was a great turnout at Maybury State Park’s 50th Anniversary Celebration! In attendance were many current and former employees, and visitors who shared history and memories. Special thanks to Northville’s Mayor Brian Turnbull for joining.

In the photo below, Kale Leftwich, Park Supervisor, asked people to share their memories of Maybury (Northville Mayor Turnbull is standing at left). Emily, a current seasonal employee, painted the beautiful Maybury State Park mural which also will be featured in Northville’s Fourth of July Parade this year. Guests with special connections to Maybury included Robert Remer, first Park Supervisor of Maybury State Park (1972-1977), and Carol whose family lived in a house on the park grounds in the 1960s because her husband was Pediatrician of the Children’s Building at the Maybury Sanatorium. She is pictured below with her son Andrew, granddaughter Abigail, and Cosmo.

Connor grew up in Northville and visited Maybury State Park frequently in his youth. He and Marissa made a point to bring their foster dogs, Theodore and Simon, to the park today for the anniversary. Jan worked for Northville Public Schools and for 10 years coordinated many student school trips to Maybury State Park.

The park received State and National recognition as well! Below, Kale holds a letter from House of Representatives, Hon. Debbie Dingell, recognizing Maybury State Park’s extraordinary work and remarkable history. Next to this is a Letter of Recognition from the Office of the Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, for being a “pillar of recreation for Michiganders in the metro Detroit area.”

Kudos to park staff who helped get everything in place and to all our volunteers who helped with this event.
