A New Entrance Path

A High Priority Project:   In January 2020, the DNR published an extensive General Management Plan for Maybury State Park.   With a lot of public inputs, the Plan identified a new non-motorized entrance along the park’s southern border as a major priority.   The entire Plan is shown at:

Present Circumstances:   Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic, state and local budgets everywhere will be under great pressure to reduce costs, and likely the level of services.   The Michigan DNR is no exception.   Capital improvement projects, like a new entrance, may be deferred for several years to come.  This is where public support is so important.    If you’d like to see a new entrance in the near future, please get involved, please keep reading, and please support this cause financially.

The Friends of Maybury Can Help:    We are an all-volunteer non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to help ensure park visitors enjoy their experience here.   Over the past 25 years, we’ve conducted numerous programs, events, projects, and workdays.   On average, we provide about $10,000 of support to the park each year, mainly through corporate and private donations.   Every dollar collected goes exclusively yo Maybury State Park. If you’d like to learn more about Friends of Maybury, please browse our website here.

Scope of the Project:   This could potentially be a significant, and relatively expensive project.   A new non-motorized entrance was placed at the corner of 8-Mile and Beck roads in 2015.   See the following for an idea of the scope of that similar project:   (TBD link here)

First Steps:   We need to conduct an engineering study to collect core samples, identify the best route, design and engineer the most appropriate trail, and create construction drawing. The engineer will also need to present their findings with county, township, and other local officials for approvals. This engineering study, which is only the first of the project, is estimated to cost about $18,000. We’d like to collect $18,000 by December of 2020, so we can have the study done over the winter.
